Equality of

Opportunity

Statement

Conservatives believe that anyone in this country should be able to achieve anything, no matter where they live or come from. We want to ensure that everyone has the equal opportunity to go as far in life as their ambition will take them. We do not believe that any group is less intrinsically capable than any other – we know that while ability is spread across the country that has not always been the case when it comes to opportunity.

As a Party, we are committed to being a successful, caring and welcoming place for all staff, officers, elected representatives, members and volunteers. We want to create a supportive and inclusive environment where all those in the Party can reach their full potential, without prejudice and discrimination. We are committed to a culture where respect and understanding is fostered, and people's different backgrounds and circumstances are positively valued.

Equality of opportunity, valuing differences, and following our necessary legal and regulatory requirements, is to the benefit of all individuals in our Party. The Equality Act should be a shield not a sword, serving to protect every individual but never be used to attack others. While specific responsibility for eliminating discrimination and providing equality of opportunity lies with Party officials, individuals at all levels have a responsibility to treat others with dignity and respect.

Free speech within the law can involve the expression of political views that some may disagree with. But a line is crossed when disagreement mutates into intimidation, which refuses to tolerate other opinions and seeks to deprive others from exercising their free speech and freedom of association.

The Party’s policies and the Party’s Code of Conduct aim to achieve equality by removing any potential discrimination whilst working towards its dedicated goal of actively encouraging and promoting equality of opportunity across the Party. As part of our commitment, we will provide training and development to all CCHQ staff and Voluntary Party officers and the Party will do all it can to promote good practice in this area as far as is reasonably possible.

Discrimination is defined as per the Equality Act 2010. Since 2016, the Party has fully adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism.

Following the review by Professor Singh in 2024, the Party has an Action Plan of steps to deliver best practice. The Action Plan is reviewed and updated annually.
