In 2021, Professor Swaran Singh, a former Commissioner at the Equality and Human Rights Commission, completed and published an independent and thorough investigation into the Party’s handling of complaints into all forms of discrimination, in particular with relation to anti-Muslim discrimination.
The Singh Investigation made twenty-seven comprehensive and challenging recommendations to overhaul our complaints processes, which the Party accepted in full.
One of those recommendations was for the Party to ensure that after twelve months, there is a one-year review carried out by the Investigation, or other appropriate body, to determine the extent to which the recommendations have been implemented.
As today marks exactly twelve months since Professor Singh published his Investigation and we accepted his recommendations, we can confirm that we have now asked Professor Swaran Singh to conduct a one-year review of our progress, which he has undertaken to do.
The Party has made major progress on implementing the recommendations of the Singh Investigation. We have published an Action Plan and six-month review, and amongst other things have reviewed and updated our social media rules, updated our Code of Conduct and Confidentiality/Transparency policies, standardised our complaints policies and procedures and are introducing a new complaints database.
The recommendations were extensive and will require ongoing work and monitoring to ensure they are having the desired effect, and this remains a strategic priority for the Party.
