Boris Johnson's new deal explained

Boris Johnson has negotiated a great new deal with the EU.

This new deal:

Ensures that we get Brexit done.

Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal will ensure that Britain takes back control of its money, its borders and its trade. Boris Johnson’s deal will get Brexit done immediately, ending the large annual payments to the EU budget, so we can unleash Britain’s potential and focus on our nation's priorities, like the NHS.

Ends the ECJ's jurisdiction.

This new deal ensures that the UK will be an independent country. Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal removes ECJ jurisdiction over our relationship with the EU, allowing our own courts to enforce our own laws.

Allows us to introduce an Australian-style points based system.

Our deal takes back control of our borders, ending free movement and unlimited EU migration.  Overall immigration will fall as we will develop a new and fairer system that will keep criminals out, while ensuring we continue to welcome talented people from around the world.  Our deal will keep our country safe, whilst welcoming the brightest and the best.

Takes back control of our laws.

UK law will no longer be ruled by the EU's Treaties, instead our elected politicians will write our laws, listening to the British people with our laws being enforced by British courts.

Sets a path to a future relationship based on friendship and trade.

This deal sets us on the right path to a Free Trade Agreement with the EU.  It will ensure that we are in full control of our national life – including foreign policy, security and defence.  Any decisions regarding cooperation on foreign policy, security and defence, or any other matter with the EU, will be a sovereign choice for the UK.  We will leave the Single Market and the customs union. There will be no political alignment with the EU.

Takes the whole of the UK out of the customs union, meaning we can strike our own trade deals around the world.

This deal means the whole UK will leave the customs union. This will strengthen our union, making it clear that EU control is coming to an end and will allow us to strike free trade deals, as one United Kingdom, with countries all over the world.

This great new deal gives us control of:

‍Our laws. Our elected British politicians, not unelected European officials will decide what laws we follow.‍

Our own standards. We will now be in control of areas like the environment and employment, enabling higher standards on workers’ rights and animal welfare. We will be able to have agricultural rules that suit the UK’s climate and farming patterns; and fishing rules so we can rebuild our fishing industry.‍

Our borders. We will be able to create a fair, Australian-style points-based immigration system.  ‍

Our money. Our Brexit deal allows us to spend our money on our priorities like the NHS, stopping future large payments to the EU.‍

Our security. If this deal passes, there is no prospect of the UK being pulled into an EU army or EU military system.  ‍

Our trade. Our deal ensures that the whole UK – including Northern Ireland – leaves the EU’s Custom Union allowing us to benefit from new trade deals.‍

Our fishing waters. Our deal ensures that the UK is in full control of its fishing waters.

The critics are wrong - this deal takes back control.

This deal sets the path to a real Brexit, based on a free trade deal. Our deal ends the EU’s political control over the UK.  The UK will become an independent country and the future trade agreement will be one between equals. We will take back control of our money, our laws and our trade, ending vast annual payments to the EU and ending the jurisdiction of the ECJ.  The Implementation Period will only last until the end of December 2020.

This deal is the fastest way to get Brexit done. If we have a majority Conservative Government on 12 December, we will be able to get Brexit done immediately leaving the EU by January at the latest. The alternative, an extension of our EU membership, would be a disaster, paying billions more to the EU, accepting ECJ jurisdiction and obeying damaging EU laws.

Not passing this deal could result in us staying in the EU, possibly forever. Voting for any other party risks Jeremy Corbyn becoming Prime Minister - he will spend months dithering and delaying, whilst holding two further referendums. A vote for Boris Johnson will ensure that we get Brexit done immediately, allowing us to focus on our priorities like the NHS.

Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal sets a clear future for the UK:

  • ‍It puts our whole country on a path to a new Free Trade Agreement with the EU. This is the right relationship for the UK’s, and one that makes clear that we will be in control of our borders, money, laws and trade like any other independent country. We will have the freedom to forge our own laws and not be bound by EU rules and regulation‍
  • It makes clear that any cooperation on foreign policy, security, and defence will be a sovereign choice for the UK. ‍
  • It gives certainty to EU citizens here and UK citizens abroad.
  • It ensures that the Irish border remains open and that Northern Ireland’s place in the UK is protected. The protocol we have negotiated ensures that Northern Ireland remains in the UK and inside its customs territory, keeping an open border with the Republic. The people of Northern Ireland will have an opportunity, every four years, to leave this system via a vote.
