First major economy to commit to net zero emissions

We’re making the UK the first major economy to legislate to end its contribution to global warming.

New laws will commit the UK to net zero emissions by 2050 as we work to leave the environment in a better state for the next generation.

We can be truly proud of our record in tackling climate change – slashing emissions while continuing to grow our economy.

Since the Conservatives came to office in 2010, we’ve already reduced emissions by a quarter, and last year was the cleanest and greenest on record, with low-carbon sources making up more than half of our electricity.

But we know there is more to do. Reaching net zero by 2050 is an ambitious target, but one that we must achieve if we are to protect our planet for future generations.
