Herbert: Miliband and Cooper’s hypocrisy on Police and Crime Commissioners

Monday, June 18 2012

Nick Herbert

Police Minister Nick Herbert MP has criticised Ed Miliband and Yvette Cooper's hypocrisy on Police and Crime Commissioners on the day Labour launched their candidates for the November elections.

  • Under Ed Miliband Labour oppose directly elected Police and Crime Commissioners and call it 'a bad job', yet they want the public to vote for Labour candidates.
  • Yvette Cooper says Labour will use the election of Police and Crime Commissioners to oppose cuts to policing, but Labour would be cutting the police if they were in government now.

Mr Herbert said:

'Labour's whole approach to Police and Crime Commissioners is confused and hypocritical.

'They oppose the greater accountability PCCs will bring, but are asking the public to support Labour candidates. They say they will use the elections to oppose police cuts, but they would be cutting the police if they were in government.

'Labour have no credibility on crime and the public can have no confidence in Labour candidates.'
