Campaign North

Campaign North is a long term commitment from the Conservative Party to the North of England. It gives activists a stronger voice - locally and nationally - and provides them with the resources to communicate with the electorate and the media.

Not only that, but activists have greater autonomy over how money is raised and where it is spent.

Activists will be supported terms of new campaign infrastructure too. Well-staffed Conservative Campaign Centres are now up and running in each of the three regions.

"Winning the local elections was the first aim we set ourselves in 2007 - and we now control more councils in the North West and Yorkshire than Labour do.

Increasing our general support in the North of England was our next aim - and Campaign North is helping us do just that.

Campaign North shows we mean business in the North. It allows money raised in the North to be spent in the North, and gives real autonomy to campaigners in each region. It is a long-term commitment and, along with William Hague agreeing to serve as Chairman of the Northern Board, shows just how much of a priority this work is for the Conservative Party. Our message of change, optimism and hope is a message for all Britons.

Campaign North is helping us deliver it in all of Britain".

David Cameron

"I am delighted to have been asked by David Cameron to chair the Northern Board of the Conservative Party and I am looking forward to campaigning with our candidates in target constituencies all the way to the next general election. It is immensely helpful to me to have the assistance of two former MPs, Michael Bates and Sir David Trippier, as my deputies, and we are all determined that the fortunes of the Conservative Party in the North of England will be revived.

Our job is to build on a strong base - we have 1,500 Councillors, 19 MPs and 6 MEPs in the North of England - and to make sure that our representation grows in each local, general and European election. Already, members of the front bench at Westminster are applying themselves energetically to their work as Shadow Ministers for Northern cities, and we are fortunate in having such strong Northern representation in the Shadow Cabinet - as Shadow Foreign Secretary I sit alongside my fellow Yorkshire MP David Davis, the Shadow Home Secretary, and, from the North West, the Shadow Chancellor, George Osborne.

Campaign North is a recent initiative but for the Conservative Party it represents a long-term commitment. The job of expanding our support across the North and playing our full part in the election of a Conservative government at the next general election, and subsequent elections, is a vital one and it must be sustained for many years to come."

William Hague

Campaign North Q&A

How can I volunteer for Campaign North?

Visit the volunteer registration page and submit your details.

How does Campaign North benefit me as an activist?

For too long there has been a huge amount of work undertaken by a small group of activists. By giving greater professional support and encouraging more members to join our activities the workload can be shared and we can put the fun back into campaigning.

What is the purpose of the Northern Board?

To oversee the effective implementation of the objective and aims of Campaign North across the three regional campaigns in Yorkshire & the Humber, North West and North East. Read more about the Northern Board.

How is Campaign North financed?

The opportunity the North of England has been given is unique in the Conservative Party - that every pound raised in donations and through the national levy on membership subscriptions will be re-invested in campaigning in the North.

In response to this decision by the national Party the Northern Board has committed itself to becoming financially self-sufficient within two years. We now have detailed management accounts prepared for each region and scrutinised by the regional boards, so donors can see where there funds are being spent.

This opportunity and obligation combine to place a strong incentive for members, supporters and donors to raise the funds to enable professional and volunteers to do the job of winning elections locally and nationally.

Already we have seen a very positive response to this initiative of David Cameron’s, with income running at double the rate this year over last. That is encouraging, but if we are to succeed in achieving a step-change in the campaigning effectiveness of the Party on the ground here in the North then we will need to go well beyond this figure.

If you are able, or, know of someone who may be willing to support these ambitious plans for the Party in the North, then we have an excellent Treasurers’ Team here in the North who can answer your questions.
