About Gavin
Gavin Williamson was born and raised in Scarborough. He attended his local comprehensive, Raincliffe Secondary School, and Scarborough Sixth Form College, before continuing his studies at the University of Bradford.
Gavin was selected to run for the South Staffordshire seat for the Conservative Party in January 2010. He was elected, in May 2010, with a 16,500 majority.
He now resides in Codsall with his wife, Joanne, and his two daughters, Annabel and Grace.
Gavin’s Experience
After graduating, Gavin became the National Chairman of the Conservative Students, before starting work in the manufacturing sector. He helped turn around a struggling pottery business, Aynsley China, and took another pottery company out of administration. He also ran a large architectural design company and property services company.
Gavin was elected as a County Councillor in 2001, during which time he was involved in community matters, taking a particular interest in education issues. He stood down, in 2005, to contest the seat of Blackpool North and Fleetwood in Lancashire. Afterwards, he became Deputy Chairman of Staffordshire Area Conservatives, Chairman of Stoke on Trent Conservative Association and Vice Chairman of Derbyshire Dales Conservative Association.
In 2010, Gavin ran for and successfully won the parliamentary seat of South Staffordshire with a majority of 16,500. Since entering Parliament in May 2010, Gavin has become a member of the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee and Chairman of the All Party Group on Motor Neurone Disease. He was also elected to the Executive of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and he is currently Co-Chair of the Parliamentary Group on Design.
In October 2011, Gavin became Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt. Hon. Hugo Swire MP, Minister of State for Northern Ireland. In July 2012, Gavin became Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt. Hon. Owen Paterson MP, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. Most recently, in September 2012, Gavin was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt. Hon. Patrick McLoughlin MP, Secretary of State for Transport.
