Nigel was born in 1950 and educated at Leeds Grammar School and The Queen’s College, Oxford. He is a Solicitor.
He is Vice President of the Eastbourne Branch of BLESMA and serves as Patron of the Betts Memorial Heart Foundation, the Eastbourne Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Eastbourne Angling Association. He is President of the Eastbourne Constitutional Club.
Nigel Waterson's Experience
Nigel was elected Member of Parliament for Eastbourne in April 1992 and appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister for Health, Gerald Malone, in 1995. The following year he was made Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister, Michael Heseltine, and appointed Opposition Whip in June 1997.
He has been Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Backbench Transport Committee and of the Conservative Backbench Tourism Committee, and was Secretary of the Conservative Backbench Shipping and Shipbuilding Committee. He is Secretary of the British-Cyprus Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Group, Co-Chairman of the All Party Group for Older People and a member of many other groups including: All Party Disablement Group, British-American Parliamentary Group, Parliamentary Maritime Group, Inter-Parliamentary Union, All Party Czech and Slovak Goup, Lords and Commons Solicitors Group.
In February 1999, Nigel was appointed Shadow Minister for Local Government and Housing. From September 2001 to July 2002, he served as Frontbench Spokesman for Trade & Industry. In June 2003, he was appointed Shadow Minister for People with Disabilities. In November 2003, he became a Shadow Minister for Work & Pensions.
