Prisk Mark 2008

Mark was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Hertford and Stortford in 2001, with over 44% of the vote. In 2005, he increased his majority to over 13,000, or 50.5%.

Mark lives with his wife Lesley in Much Hadham, at the heart of the constituency. Born in Cornwall on 12 June 1962, and educated at Truro School and Reading University, Mark is a Chartered Surveyor by profession. Mark ran his own business for ten years before entering politics.

A record of action

Mark is a hard working MP with a record of action. In recent years he has:

  • Saved local post offices from closure in Hertford and Bishop’s Stortford.
  • Fulfilled his 2005 election commitment to help secure more police officers for the district, especially in Bishop’s Stortford.
  • Successfully fought for new rolling stock for commuters into London.
  • Campaigned against a second runway at Stansted Airport and helped ensure that a Conservative Government would oppose such a proposal, if elected.
  • Campaigned against Labour’s regional housing plan for East Herts, including 3,000 acres north of Harlow. He has helped ensure that a Conservative Government would scrap the regional plan and return to East Herts the powers to determine local development and housing.
  • Successfully fought to secure improved JobCentre facilities in Bishop’s Stortford.
  • Campaigned for and opened a new Urgent Care Centre in Hertford.
  • Successfully campaigned against new supermarkets in Ware and Hertford.
    Parliament

His parliamentary interests include small business and enterprise, urban planning and regeneration, as well as defence and foreign affairs. Since 2002, Mark has served on the Conservative front bench as Shadow Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Shadow Paymaster General and then Home Affairs Whip.

In December 2005, he was made Shadow Spokesman for Business & Enterprise and this role was confirmed in July 2007 with a wider brief on Enterprise, Deregulation and Competition. In May 2010, he was appointed Minister for Business, Innovation and Skills and in September 2012 he was appointed Minister of State for Housing.

Personal

Mark is married to Lesley and they live in Much Hadham in his constituency. In his spare time Mark watches rugby and cricket, and is a member of Saracens RFC. He also enjoys singing and is a Vice Chairman of the Parliament Choir. Mark and Lesley are keen theatre and cinema goers. When in the constituency he enjoys walking in the beautiful countryside in East Hertfordshire.

Brown’s budget is bad for small business

Mark Prisk, Shadow Minister for Business & Enterprise, spoke to Webcameron about Gordon Brown’s 3% increase in the small company tax rate. We also visited 3 businesspeople who will be affected by the tax hike, to hear about the negative impact it will have on their business.
