James was born in 1949 in Suffolk. He was educated at Framlingham College, Suffolk, and Writtle Agricultural College. He is married with two sons.

James was a member of Suffolk Coastal District Council from 1976 to 1987. He served as the youngest ever Chairman of the Council in 1983.

James Paice's Experience

James stood as Conservative Candidate for Caernarvon in the 1979 General Election, and in 1987 he was elected Member of Parliament for South East Cambridgeshire with a majority of 17,502.

He was Secretary of the Backbench Employment Committee from 1988-89 and of the Backbench Horticulture and Markets Sub-Committee. He was a member of the Select Committee on Employment from 1987-89. In December 1989 he was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to Baroness Trumpington, Minister of State at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

In December 1990 he was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to John Gummer, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries of Food. In the General Election of April 1992 he was returned as Member of Parliament for South East Cambridgeshire and was subsequently re-appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to John Gummer at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and from June 1993 at the Department of the Environment.

James was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Employment from July 1994-July 1995. In July 1995 he was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Education and Employment.

In the General Election of May 1997, he was re-elected as Member of Parliament for South East Cambridgeshire and in June 1997 he was appointed Opposition Spokesman for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. In September 2001, he was appointed a Frontbench Spokesman for Home Affairs. In November 2003, he became Shadow Minister for Home, Constitutional and Legal Affairs.

Since September 2004, he has served as the Shadow Minister responsible for agriculture. In May 2010, he was appointed Minister for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.
