John was born in 1939 in Preston, Lancashire. He was educated at Silcoates School, Wakefield, and St Catharine`s College, Cambridge (Exhibition in History, MA in Economics). He is married to Judith Jackson and has two step-sons.
John is a Director of CRU International Ltd, a business information company he formed with a partner in 1968. He previously worked for the Financial Times and The Economist.
John Horam's Experience
John was elected Member of Parliament for Orpington in 1992 and re-elected in 1997.
In the last Conservative Government he was Parliamentary Secretary at the Office of Public Service and Science from March to November 1995, then Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Health (1995-97).
John is presently Chairman of the Environmental Audit Committee of the House of Commons. Before joining the Conservative Party in 1987, he was a Labour and then Social Democratic MP (1970-83) and was Parliamentary Secretary at the Department of Transport.
