Sir Alan has been a strong campaigner for the Saffron Walden constituency since he was first elected in 1977.
With a large employer such as Stansted Airport in the constituency, issues such as transport infrastructure and housing become even more important with such a large workforce wanting to live ever-nearer to their place of work. Sir Alan’s knowledge and expertise on these issues will be invaluable as these pressures grow greater.
Sir Alan strongly believes that small businesses in the area are a big factor in the low unemployment rate in the constituency and he will continue to promote and support these companies whenever possible. Post 2015, Sir Alan will seek to protect the rural character of the constituency; to campaign against further runways at the airport; and to provide a much improved service on the two railway lines serving the area. Above all he will be a strong voice for the constituency at Westminster.
