Prime Minister David Cameron has launched the National Citizen Service (NCS) Facebook site aimed at encouraging year 11 pupils to sign up for the NCS.
The National Citizen Service will give 11,000 16-year-olds the chance to learn new skills and get involved in their community in summer 2011.
NCS will include fun and challenging activities like canoeing or abseiling and will give 16 year-olds you the opportunity to help others and give something back to your community through a project of their design.
By taking part in NCS pupils will learn new skills that will make their future brighter and show that young people make a positive impact in their community. It takes place over the summer: three weeks full time, including two weeks away from home, with a further 30 hours on a part time basis.
Twelve organisations will be leading NCS programmes this summer and over 11,000 places will be available, with more places available in future years.
Launching the Facebook site Prime Minister David Cameron wrote:
"I want National Citizen Service to inspire you to realise what you can achieve. This summer you will be able to spend two months mixing with other young people, learning new skills, and putting something back into your community.
And he added, "NCS will be available to 11,000 people in 2011 and 30,000 in 2012. Over time I want all sixteen year olds to be able to take part."
