Cameron's vision for the Big Society

David Cameron reiterated his focus on the Big Society at a PM Direct event in London where he spoke to leading figures from the charitable and voluntary sectors.

Emphasising the duty we all have to "mend the broken society" the Prime Minister outlined how the Big Society approach differs from the "Whitehall have got all the answers" stance Labour followed.

He said the question those who worked in Government must ask when legislating now is "What are the things we can do to help you to do more to build a stronger society."

The Prime Minister went on to set out the three key areas the Government is concentrating on to back the Big Society agenda:

• Opening up public services
• Supporting a resurgence of volunteering
• Encouraging charitable giving and devolving more power to local government and beyond.

Just as with re-booting the economy David Cameron said that "it is enterprise, it is entrepreneurship" that is going to make this agenda work and that is why today's announcement of £200m in funding support through the Big Society Bank is so fundamental.
