Inquiry needed into nationalisation of East Coast Main Line

Monday, February 15 2010

Theresa Villiers

A series of Freedom of Information requests have unearthed a number of letters and meetings which question Labour’s handling of the nationalisation of the East Coast Main Line.

As a result the Conservatives have today called for an inquiry into the Government’s actions that led to the nationalisation crisis.

Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, Theresa Villiers said:

"If National Express made it clear to the Department in April that they were in serious trouble, Lord Adonis’s comments in June appear to be stretching the truth to its limit, and his surprised reaction on July 1st now looks insincere.

"On an issue as important as this, Lord Adonis should have been upfront with the House. These continuing revelations about what happened last year, behind the doors of the Department for Transport, leave Lord Adonis with serious questions to answer about his handling of the crisis.

So we are calling for an inquiry to uncover the real truth behind Labour’s nationalisation of the East Coast Main Line."
