Gordon Brown must end confusion over ID cards

Sunday, December 13 2009

Chris Grayling

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling has today written to the Prime Minister following comments made this weekend by Chancellor Alistair Darling, which signalled an end to ID cards.

In the letter, Mr Grayling asks the Prime Minister to put an end to the confusion over whether Labour will continue with the ID cards scheme.

This is made more urgent by the fact that people in Manchester are already being encouraged by the Government to pay for them out of their own pocket.

Grayling said it would be "nothing short of outrageous" for Labour Ministers to encourage people "to pay out money to take part in a scheme they are planning to scrap".

"Gordon Brown has to come clean about his plans for ID cards right now", he added.
