Ending Labour's support for polluting energy projects

Monday, November 23 2009

Andrew Mitchell

Andrew Mitchell has announced that a Conservative government will end the use of the Export Credit Guarantee Department (ECGD) to support investment in 'dirty' fossil fuel power stations around the world.

In a speech at the Overseas Development Institute, Andrew explained that taxpayers' money shouldn't be spent on projects that contribute to global warming.

The Shadow Secretary of State for International Development said it is “scandalous” that, although the world has woken up to the threat of climate change, Labour are still using taxpayers' money to guarantee unsustainable energy projects.

Andrew went on to set out our plans to make the ECGD more pro-active in helping to spread new 'green' energy technology to poor countries, and he added:

"This will send a message to the rest of the world that we are ready to lead from the front on ending environmentally harmful subsidies."
