Welsh Conservative MP Stephen Crabb has held talks with a senior Territorial Army officer and TA members following the Government's decision to stop TA training for six months.
Stephen, the MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire, described the cuts as unacceptable and warned that the move could do long term damage to the Armed Forces.
The decision to stand down the Territorial Army follows an immediate cut to the Army Land Force Budget of £54 million as resources are diverted to the war in Afghanistan.
Last December Stephen saw for himself the critically important work reservists are doing alongside regular troops when he visited Camp Bastion in southern Afghanistan.
There are approximately 1,900 TA reservists in Wales, some of whom have already served tours of duty in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Following the announcement these troops will not be paid to train over the coming months and now face a choice to train without pay or to stop their TA involvement for the time being.
Only reservists who have already been notified that they will be deployed to Afghanistan in the next six months will continue to receive paid training.
Stephen understands the Ministry of Defence failed to provide even senior ranking Territorial Army personnel with prior warning of the proposed cuts. As such, soldiers received the news via telephone or the national press rather than through a TA briefing.
The cut will have a significant impact on Pembrokeshire TA soldiers and their families who make considerable sacrifices to take part in TA activities. Some of these reservists rely on the TA as a necessary source of income for their families.
Stephen said: "This cut in Territorial Army activity, and the manner in which TA officers and soldiers were informed, is completely unacceptable. The Government is asking volunteers who willingly put their lives at risk for the country to forgo vital basic training. Furthermore, they are asking individuals and families to relinquish necessary income without prior warning.
"In recent years the TA has demonstrated its outstanding quality on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. TA reservists serve alongside the regular troops and many have been injured and some have been killed. They deserve far better treatment than this."
