Population figures demonstrate Labour's immigration failure

Wednesday, October 21 2009

Damian Green

Shadow Immigration Minister Damian Green has responded to figures which reveal that the population could increase by over 4 million to 65.6 million in 2018.

The Office for National Statistics concluded that just over two-thirds of the projected total increase in the UK population between 2008 and 2033 is expected to be either directly or indirectly due to future migration.

Damian Green said that the figures showed "how irresponsible Alan Johnson was when he said in July that he did not lie awake at night worrying about a population of 70 million", adding that "the failure of Labour to control immigration has left us in this difficult position".

He pledged that a Conservative Government would "introduce a limit on the numbers allowed to come here to work, as well as other measures to fight illegal immigration".
