William Hague has called on the David Milband to apologise for his remarks about Michal Kaminski, following new comments from the Chief Rabbi of Poland.
The Chief Rabbi has expressed his anger that people are quoting him to prove Michal Kaminski is an anti-Semite.
Kaminski is the leader of the new European Conservatives and Reformists grouping in the European Parliament. David Miliband has publicly cited the Chief Rabbi as having "denounced" Kaminski's "anti-semitic, neo Nazi past".
The Chief Rabbi, Michael Schudrich, has now defended Kaminski's reputation, saying "there is no doubt that Kaminski is a strong friend of the State of Israel. He himself has spoken out against anti-Semitism on several occasions during the past decade".
"It is a grotesque distortion that people are quoting me to prove that Kaminski is an anti-Semite. Portraying Kaminski as a neo Nazi plays into the painful and false stereotype that all Poles are anti-Semitic", he added.
Schudrich also criticised an article by James Macintyre for being "misleading and untrue", saying the headline "does not represent what I said to the author".
William Hague, the Shadow Foreign Secretary, said "it is now time for David Miliband to do the decent thing, apologise and withdraw his accusations."
