Cameron congratulates Angela Merkel on election result

David Cameron has congratulated German Chancellor Angela Merkel on forming a new centre-right government following Germany's national elections.

Merkel has said that a coalition between the Free Democrats and her centre-right CDU/CSU bloc would have the momentum to tackle Germany's challenges.

"I am delighted that Angela Merkel and the CDU/CSU have been returned to office in the German elections, and in a position to form a new centre-right government with the Free Democrats", Cameron said. 

He also sent Merkel his "warm congratulations as she celebrates this result, and as she embarks on her second term as Chancellor."

David was elected Leader of the Conservatives in December 2005 and appointed Prime Minister in May 2010.
