The Conservatives have published an independent consultation paper on how to create a national network of commercially viable local television stations.
The paper, written by Roger Parry, sets out radical plans that could see the first wave of 80 city stations launched in 2012.
Jeremy Hunt, the Shadow Culture Secretary, said, “This is the sort of radical thinking that was missing from Digital Britain and I’m grateful to Roger Parry for producing such an excellent set of ideas.”
“A vibrant local media sector should be a vital part of every community across the country. By looking at how Government can help create new, sustainable business models in this sector we’ll ensure the long-term provision of local news and local journalism.”
“In contrast propping up existing structures with public money like the Government has proposed would simply stifle an already under pressure sector.”
Roger Parry added, “Digital developments in television production and transmission mean it is now possible to have viable local TV services and thus bring relevant video journalism to communities traditionally served only by print.”
“By combining resources across media types local companies can thrive by providing the type of services readers and advertisers now want."
