Hague calls for release of UK Embassy staff arrested in Iran

Friday, July 3 2009

William Hague

William Hague has described the prospect of British Embassy staff being put on show trials in Iran as “utterly unacceptable”.

The Shadow Foreign Secretary stressed that the harassment of Embassy staff was “a violation of diplomatic norms and conventions” and called for the immediate release of those still being detained in Tehran.

“This is a matter of principle and we should be able to expect solidarity and a united response from other European countries if Iran continues down this unwise path.”

William warned, “A weak response from Europe would encourage Iran to think that it can try to bully and divide the international community with impunity.”
