Funding cut undermines support for Welsh film industry

Assembly Government support for the Welsh film industry was cut by more than £1 million last year, Welsh Conservatives have revealed.

The party has learned that direct Assembly Government support was slashed from £2.419 million to £1.409 million between 2007-8 and 2008-9.

Earlier this month Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones said the film industry was "giving a real boost" to Wales' profile and tourism.

And last year First Minister Rhodri Morgan claimed it was an "exciting time" to be involved in the creative and cultural industries in Wales.

Shadow Heritage Minister Alun Cairns AM has accused the Labour-Plaid Cymru government of undermining the work done by Wales-based film producers at a time when ministers were welcoming the decision to film Hollywood blockbusters here.

Commenting on the cut in funding, Alun Cairns AM said: "I welcome the increase in government support for the film industry since 1999. However, at a time when ministers are talking up the importance of the film industry to the Welsh economy it makes no sense to now be cutting funding in this way."

And he stressed, "This underlines the importance of ministers refocusing Assembly Government spending on areas which will make a direct and sustainable difference to the Welsh economy and help it out of recession."
