Clark calls for quicker roll-out of smart meters

Monday, May 11 2009

Greg Clark

Greg Clark has described the Government’s timetable for introducing smart meters into the UK as “frustratingly slow”.

Despite previously promising to install smart meters in every home by 2017, the Government has now announced full roll-out will not take place until 2020.

Greg, the Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, said he welcomed Labour taking up our proposal on smart meters – outlined in our Low Carbon Economy green paper - but he attacked the delay in actually installing them:

“In other countries around the world, smart meters are already being rolled out now, resulting in savings of up to 15 per cent on energy bills and reduced CO2 emissions.”

Greg stressed, “Ministers must speed their programme up so consumers and the environment can start to feel the benefits.”

Rt Hon Greg Clark

Greg served as Director of Policy for the Conservative Party under three successive Leaders before being elected to Parliament in 2005.
