Theresa Villiers, the Shadow Transport Secretary, has praised the Competition Commission’s decision to break-up the airports operator BAA.
The regulator has ordered BAA to sell off Stansted, Gatwick and either Glasgow or Edinburgh airports, stressing the lack of competition between BAA-owned airports was “detrimental to passengers and airlines”.
Theresa said, “The Conservatives have been calling for BAA’s monopoly to be broken up for over a year, so I welcome the Competition Commission’s recommendation that BAA should loosen its grip and sell Gatwick and Stansted."
She promised to keep up the pressure on BAA to make it improve the quality of service for customers in the airports it retains:
“Only then will it be possible to address the Heathrow hassle that can cause so much frustration to business passengers and holiday-makers.”
