Neville-Jones attacks Labour's failure to shut down terrorist websites

Friday, March 20 2009

Pauline Neville-Jones

Baroness Neville-Jones, the Shadow Security Minister, has attacked Labour for failing to shut down a single terrorist website, despite having the power to do so for over 2 years.

In 2005, Tony Blair said that 'the rules of the game are changing' - and the 2006 Terrorism Act gave the Government the power to shut down extremist websites. Charles Clarke, then Home Secretary, said, 'We believe that it will enable us to address the threat we face'.

But since then, not a single site has closed down - and Baroness Neville-Jones stressed this was a result of "dangerous complacency and incompetence":

"We have known for years that organisations like al-Qaeda are increasingly using the internet as a tool for radicalisation. So it is shocking that the Government has failed to shut down a single terrorist website."

And she added, "They claim that they haven't closed any down because they prefer to put pressure on internet service providers to remove dangerous material. But they're not even able to tell us what they've achieved by this route."
