Milton warns nurses are "bogged down" in red tape

Tuesday, March 31 2009

Anne Milton

Anne Milton, the Shadow Health Minister, has attacked Labour's approach to the NHS after a survey of nurses revealed they are being overwhelmed by red tape and paperwork.

A survey in Nursing Standard magazine found that the pressure of meeting unrealistic targets and understaffing were the biggest concerns facing nurses.

Anne described the findings as "extremely concerning", and said, "We all know that unrealistic targets can produce perverse incentives, so it is not surprising that Labour's targets are one of the top concerns for nurses."

She stressed that the current system of nursing is "simply not working":

"We currently have too many nurses who are bogged down in red tape and paperwork, resulting in too few nurses on the front line doing what they do best - helping people."
