Djanogly warns of slump in weekly working hours

Monday, March 2 2009

Jonathan Djanogly

Jonathan Djanogly, the Shadow Business Minister, has highlighted new statistics showing that the number of hours worked in Britain has slumped by 14 million per week.

Employees are now working more than fifty million fewer hours each month than they were a year ago - and the figures suggest that many firms are heeding Labour's controversial advice to cut opening hours during the recession, with many employees taking pay cuts in order to stave off redundancy.

Jonathan stressed Labour's failure to help struggling businesses is "costing workers dear":

"As businesses cut back on working hours, many people will see their incomes fall. It is vital that the Government gets credit flowing again and provides real help for businesses trying to work their way out of trouble".
