Clark calls for "a green new deal"

Friday, March 6 2009

Greg Clark

Greg Clark has stressed it is "time to act, not time to talk" ahead of Labour's Carbon Industrial Summit.

The event, taking place today, will be attended by Peter Mandelson and Ed Miliband and will look at the development of a “Low Carbon Industrial Strategy”.

But Greg, the Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, warned that it must not become "yet another talking shop".

And he urged Labour to adopt the proposals set out in our Low Carbon Economy green paper in order to create a "green new deal":

  • Ensuring carbon capture and storage is fitted to all new coal-fired power stations
  • Developing a smart national electricity grid
  • Enabling biogas to be fed into the gas network
  • Creating an entitlement for every home to be fitted with up to £6,500 of energy efficiency improvements, with the cost being repaid through fuel bills.

Greg stressed, “Adopting these measures now could begin a revolution in our energy sector that could create thousands of new green jobs starting immediately when they are desperately needed."

And he warned, “Labour’s procrastination is putting these vital green jobs in peril.”
