Grayling calls for a kids' curfew to protect our streets

Monday, February 23 2009

Chris Grayling

Chris Grayling has outlined plans to allow the police to ground young people caught causing trouble in their communities.

The proposal is part of tough new measures designed to stop young people from getting dragged into a cycle of crime.

In a speech to the Local Government Association, Chris, the Shadow Home Secretary, stressed the need to give police the powers to go straight to a magistrate and get an order confining young troublemakers to their home for up to a month (except for during school hours).

He said, “I think our police need the power to ground a young persistent troublemaker – in the hope that we can stop them from getting so far into trouble that they end up in the criminal justice system.”

And he warned, “We’re not going to deal with the problem of antisocial behaviour with a gradualist strategy. It just needs to be stamped out – and we should demand tough action from our police in doing so.”
