Afriyie calls for improved access to public data

Tuesday, February 10 2009

Adam Afriyie

Adam Afriyie challenged the Government to improve access to public data in a speech to the Policy Exchange tonight.

The Shadow Science and Innovation Minister demanded the publication of the Government’s trading fund assessment, and called for better regulation of government information trading to help citizens generate new digital business from hidden data.

He warned, “The pace of technological change is breathtaking, but the pace of governmental change is not. This means that policies which seemed reasonable just ten years ago are now old fashioned, out of step and, potentially, counter-productive for the economy.”

And he stressed, “In today’s economic climate, when the talk is of recovery, we must ensure that government data policies help rather than hinder economic growth.”
