David Willetts has called on Gordon Brown to adopt our proposals to provide tens of thousands of employee-led apprenticeships.
The Shadow Innovation, Universities and Skills Secretary warned that it was “far from clear” how many of the 35,000 apprenticeships announced by Gordon Brown today were actually new, as Labour have announced many similar schemes before.
David said the Government should instead adopt the plans we announced last year to expand the number of apprenticeships by 100,000 by refocusing money from the Government's current bureaucratic training scheme.
“If Gordon Brown really wants to help people in the recession, he should adopt our proposals to redirect wasteful spending which would provide tens of thousands more proper employee-led apprenticeships.”
Small and medium sized enterprises, the ones that are most at risk in the recession, would get bonuses for taking on apprentices under our proposals, giving them a further boost.
