Greg Clark has described the Government’s approach to Britain’s gas supplies as “complacent and careless” after it claimed that the dispute between Russia and Ukraine will have no effect on the UK.
The Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change said the disruptions caused to European gas supplies by ongoing dispute was “unacceptable and very worrying”, and called on both sides to resolve it urgently.
Greg said, “The Government is being complacent and careless in saying that this will have no effect in the UK. North Sea gas output has been in decline for several years and by 2020 the UK will be importing 80 per cent of its gas.”
And he added, “Britain is becoming one of the most vulnerable countries in Europe to turbulence in gas supply, meaning that UK consumers pay the price because we are more exposed to volatile gas prices than our neighbours.”
Greg served as Director of Policy for the Conservative Party under three successive Leaders before being elected to Parliament in 2005.
