Gove demands full disclosure in Haringey

Tuesday, December 2 2008

Michael Gove

Michael Gove has written to the Chief Executive of Haringey Council, Dr. Ita O’Donovan, outlining the lessons that must be learnt from the Baby P case.

The Shadow Children’s Secretary stressed that full disclosure and public accountability are now vital in Haringey.

“It is not enough just to follow approved bureaucratic procedures; everything we do has to show we appreciate the need to demonstrate responsibility in office.”

Michael asked Dr O’Donovan to answer a series of questions relating to Sharon Shoesmith and the five other suspended social workers:

  • For how long will they be suspended on full pay?
  • When will he make a decision over Sharon Shoesmith’s future?
  • What steps is he taking to ensure no-one who has forfeited public trust leaves office with a substantial pay-off at the taxpayers’ expense?
  • Will he be taking action against any other council employees?

Michael stressed that an informed public debate is vital to ensure a speedy resolution to the affair and allow us to get on with the job of reforming child protection services across the country.

But he warned, “This can only occur if those in accountable and responsible positions are held accountable and demonstrate responsibility.”
