Grieve says Labour should enforce existing prostitution laws

Wednesday, November 19 2008

Dominic Grieve

Dominic Grieve has stressed Labour should focus on enforcing the existing laws around prostitution rather than creating new ones.

Last year, the Met Police’s human trafficking unit was axed, and convictions for trafficking for sexual exploitation fell by 40 per cent.

Dominic, the Shadow Home Secretary, called on the Government to create a dedicated Border Police Force to tackle human trafficking, as well as addressing the reasons why so many women find themselves working in prostitution, such as family breakdown, drug and alcohol abuse and poor education.

Theresa May, the Shadow Women’s Secretary, warned that Labour’s new proposals on prostitution could force the activity further underground, putting vulnerable women in even more danger.

And she stressed that the Government should be doing more to help women who find themselves forced into prostitution.
