Urgent action needed on unfair energy tariffs

Monday, October 6 2008

Alan Duncan

Alan Duncan has demanded an urgent crackdown on the “unacceptable commercial practices” that drive up energy bills for the poorest households.

A new report from Ofgem highlights some of the unfair energy tariffs that are penalising the poorest people and excluding vulnerable households from the cheapest deals.

Alan, the Shadow Secretary for Business, called on Labour to stop dithering and adopt our plans to allow people with Post Office Card Accounts (POCAs) to pay their utility bills at the cheapest possible rates:

“They’ve already dithered for 6 months – this latest delay will only serve to leave the fuel poor in limbo.”

He accused the Government of ignoring this sensible policy because of their “resistance to the whole concept of POCA and their desire to manage the nationwide decline of the Post Office network.”
