Brown's indecision on 42-day detention speaks volumes

Monday, October 6 2008

Dominic Grieve

Dominic Grieve has criticised Gordon Brown over the news that Number 10 is preparing to climb down over the 42-day detention of suspects without charge.

The Shadow Home Secretary said, “We now have the worst of all worlds in a highly critical area. We know this policy is unnecessary, unjustified and unworkable - it has now drifted into the realm of indecision.”

In June, Mr. Brown claimed 42-day detention was essential as he pushed the policy through the House of Commons – but now he is briefing that he will not press it through.

Dominic stressed that this climbdown was as a result of self-interest from Mr. Brown:

“While we are against this draconian and counter-productive policy, the public would expect the Government to take decisions based on the national interest, not the political survival of the Prime Minister.”
