Discarding fish is environmentally unsound, wasteful and leads to confusion over fish stocks

Fishing net

Responding to reports that the UK fishing industry has said it faces ruin because EU quotas mean thousands of tonnes of dead fish are dumped back into the sea, Shadow Fisheries Minister, Bill Wiggin said:

“We have always been opposed to discarding and have campaigned for the Government to change their policy on this. Discarding is environmentally unsound, wasteful and leads to confusion between fishermen and scientists as to what fish stocks are actually in the sea. We must address this situation as a matter of urgency if we are to create a sustainable British fishing industry.”
