Patients deserve a strong, independent voice, say Conservatives

Conservatives have launched their consultation on a new policy to involve patients and the public in decisions about the NHS.

“Health Watch” would be an independent, national body with statutory powers to represent patients and monitor the health service. Where services are not meeting national standards or local priorities, Health Watch would have the power to refer matters to the health service regulator. The new body would also have a role in handling complaints and engaging the expertise of the voluntary sector.

Commenting on the consultation, Shadow Health Minister John Baron MP said:

“Labour has failed to give patients the strong, independent voice they deserve. The Government’s latest proposals leave patients on the sidelines, denying them the right to monitor NHS services or refer problems to the correct authorities.

“We have therefore launched our own consultation on the future of patient and public involvement in health. There are many issues to be addressed, and I look forward to hearing from patients, the public, and NHS staff on the best way to proceed.”

On 26th October, as part of the consultation on Health Watch, Conservatives will be hosting a summit on patient and public involvement in health.
