An exciting time for Northern Ireland

Owen Paterson MP, Friday, November 21 2008

Owen Paterson

I’m delighted by the new political force we’ve agreed to create with the Ulster Unionists. I was in Belfast last night to see the Northern Ireland Conservatives back the agreement unanimously, and the Ulster Unionist Executive with virtual unanimity. This reflects huge support for what we are trying to achieve.

For too long, too many voters from all communities have been alienated by the current political landscape. This agreement will change that. For the first time in decades, every voter in Northern Ireland will have a new choice. This will allow them to influence the national Government and have their say on every day issues such as pensions, taxation and the economy. They will be able to put sectarian divisions behind them.

We are setting up a Joint Committee, consisting of four Conservatives and four Ulster Unionists, to oversee further developments. It will be responsible for coordinating the identification of candidates for the General Election and have responsibility for running the European and General Election campaigns.

This new political force will put up candidates in Westminster and European elections in Northern Ireland. If elected, the candidates will have the full rights and responsibilities of all those taking the Conservative Whip. Jim Nicholson MEP will be the candidate for the European election and, if elected, will sit as a full member of the Conservative group.

This is an exciting time for Northern Ireland. A strong and stable union offers the best future for all its citizens. Last night’s agreement will strengthen the Union and put an end to Northern Ireland’s isolation from mainstream UK politics.

This is very good news for Northern Ireland voters. Congratulations to all those involved in this development. This will give proper choice to voters there which has been missing since the political polarisation which has taken place in recent times. I trust that this new political force will be the catalyst for more creative and forward looking politics in Northern Ireland and give this unique and special part of the UK a new and significant opportunity to influence national government and strengthen the union which has been under serious pressure through decades of conflict and division. This should herald a most welcome new era for Northern Ireland politics.
